The Upper Midwest Chapter won 2014 Chapter of the Year for a record 14th time since our incorporation in 1972.

We also received a Chapter Enchancement Scholarship in 2014 of $200 allowing us to participate in the 2014 Zero Prostate Cancer Run/Walk.

Congratulations to our members and the Board of Directors for their efforts in achieving this distinction!

Jamie Olson, RN, CURN was a recipient of the 2014 Annual Conference Scholarship that provides expenses up to a maximum of $1,200

Sarah King, CMA was the recipient of the Jan LeBouton Certification Scholarship which allowed her to receive a stipend to cover the cost of the CBUNA Certification Examination, a copy the CBUNA Examination Preparation Guide, as well as a complimentary registration to the SUNA Annual Conference that year

Jean Wyman, PhD, APRN, GNP-BC, FAAN was co-recipient with Diane Newman of the 2014 President's Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to SUNA

2014 Spring Seminar
April 11-12, 2014

Spring weather arrived just in time for the spring UMC SUNA spring conference in Rochester, MN.  Attendance by urologic medical assistances, nurses and advanced practice nurses enjoyed updates from fantastic speakers and industry representation.

Friday evening dinner symposium, sponsored by Dendreon - "Advances in Immunotherapy"; fabulous dinner and discussion by our representatives with Dendreon.

Speakers from the local area shared topics on the following subjects:
* Legislative changes and how they impact the future of nursing.
* Social networking and how they impact the future of nursing.
*Intensity Modulated Ration Therapy a precise treatment for metastatic prostate cancer.
*Acute kidney stone management.
*Process analysis of incontinence products cost/benefit ratio.
*Fistula management in Africa - which lead to development of an interactive video trainer to standardize care.

Industry Representation:
180 Medical, Abbvie, Actavis (formerly Wastson), ActivStyle, Amgen, Astellas, Byram Healthcare, Coloplast, Cure Medical, Dendreon, Ferring Pharmaceuticalos, Medivation and Pfizer.

Door Prizes were plentiful:
Gift cards to restaurants (Applebee's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Caribou Coffee) and iTunes cards, as well as a UMC SUNA certification renewal were awarded.

* UMCSUNA member, Jessica Hus RN, CURN was awarded the Ron Brady Career Mobility Award to help her further her nursing education *

* UMCSUNA member, Jean Lewis BSN, APRN, ANP was awarded the Ardeth Hale Leadership Award. This was the first time this award has been given and will now be given annually at the Annual Conference. *

UMCSUNA Spring Conference 2010

We had a great turn out for the UMCSUNA spring conference held April 10, 2010 at the Geffen Auditorium at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  We had 86 people attend the conference on Saturday which featured talks about Pediatric urology, Urothelial cell carcinoma, High dose Brachytherapy, Advanced Prostate CA, Holmium Lazer for BPH. 
Friday night we had 29 people attend the evening symposium. We took a tour of the Rochester Medical Corporate headquarters in Stewartville, MN and then they did a dinner for the attendees at the Rochester Golf and Country Club.

2009 March of Dimes

Braving torrential downpours the UMCSUNA team joined thousands of compassionate teams across the country in a "March for Babies" to help all moms and babies.
March of Dimes' mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

At the Annual Conference in Philadelphia in October, the Upper Midwest Chapter was well-represented in both attendance and participation. The Basic Urology Course, presented by Jean Lewis, Mari Olsen, Theresa Kolle, Diane Mann, and Amy Driscoll, was well received by approximately 45 more

Spring Leap Into Urology Seminar

The Upper Midwest Chapter held their quarterly board meeting on 4/11/08 with 16 board members attending. Friday evening headlined our Spring Seminar with an educational symposium, Understanding the ED Treatment Paradigm. Leap Forward in Urology was the theme of the Saturday seminar, again just an outstanding event and our committee, Diane Mann, Mari Olsen, and Jamie Olson need to stand up and take a bow-they outdid themselves this year. Topics discussed were: Prostate Cancer Research: A cutting-Edge Look at Genetics, Molecular Biology and Immunology., Deflux for Vesicoureteral Reflux, Making Love Again: Hope for Couples Facing Loss of Sexual Intimacy, Health Behavior Change: A Model for Improving Patient care, Testicular Cancer: Current Treatment Modalities and Future Directions and It’s Not What Happens to You, It’s What You Do About It!. At the conclusion of the seminar, participants were provided with up to date information on current urology topics and also learned the importance of how to cope with life challenges.


Team-Day at MMC

Members of SUNA were invited to attend a “team day” on 1/11/08, for the nursing staff at MMC, Rochester, Mn. Members attending shared information about SUNA and UMC/SUNA and presented information about membership and about the upcoming Spring Seminar on 4/12/08.


Educational Presentations Winter 2007

There were 4 luncheon educational presentations for the membership in Rochester, Mn. this winter.  Topics presented were, Updates in prostate Cancer, Improving Patient Adherence through Health Behavior Change, and Urology Dealing with “no” People with contact hours available for nurses.

Member organizes fundraiser to support Adopt-a-Family

During the Christmas season 2007, Sharon Wernken assisted staff on her unit on her day off with a silent auction and bake sale to raise money for Adopt a family.  This group raised over $5000 making it possible to help many families have a merrier Christmas they may  otherwise might not have had.

Bladder Health Committee presented at Curves in Mendota Heights

The Bladder Health Committee was asked to return to Curves in Mendota Heights, Mn  for their re-grand opening in fall (2007).  They were 1 of 8 displays sharing information about general bladder health, UTI’s, incontinence, OAB, IC and local hormone therapy.  Approximately 15-20 people received information or discussed concerns.


Free Prostate Screening in Fargo-Moorehead

The Prostate Health Group offered free prostate screening in the Fargo-Moorhead, Mn area for 250 men.
